On the theme of Berkeley classics, we're blogging about Homemade Cafe on Sacramento & Dwight. This charming diner spot has been around since 1979- that's 40 years, people! The current owner, Collin, grew up in Berkeley, and started at Homemade as a busboy before apprenticing at various restaurants. In the age of rapidly increasing costs of living, we're super thankful Homemade is here to stay.
Our favorite time to visit Homemade is during their "Happy Hour" from 7am to 9am, Monday-Friday, where you can order the famed $6 breakfast. Russell's $6 favorite is the 2 Egg Basic: Two eggs served with your choice of home fries, black beans or grits and toast. Whitney's $6 favorite is the Wrap: Scrambled eggs wrapped in corn tortillas and served with fresh salsa and sour cream. Buy a coffee and you'll get free refills to buzz you up for the rest of the day
A popular brunch spot on the weekends, Homemade has specials they serve up for the weekend crowd (although no happy hour understandably at this busier time). That being said, it's still an affordable, tasty spot, where the meals are hearty without being absurdly overdone only to be made into more food waste like plenty of other restaurants. In short, Homemade hasn't spoiled the meaning of brunch (we're talking about YOU, San Francisco-- your crazy lines and absurd prices).
Homemade is also a creative spot, frequently offering seasonal options like pumpkin pancakes in the fall. They feature local artists on their walls, and we love their Coffee Mug Chandelier and cozy booths. Homemade offers monthly Dinner "Pop-Ups", which we haven't had the chance to attend yet but would absolutely love to in the future. The "Pop-Ups" are pricier for a special night out (4 courses, $85, prix-fixe menu, includes tax and tip and crafted with a theme)... but what a great place to support while you celebrate a special occasion and eat a decadent and delicious 4 course meal!

Oh, another reason we love Homemade? They're active in social justice. In October 2018 they donated part of their proceeds to the National Voter Protection Action Fund and The Alliance for Youth Action, as a participant in Dine Out for Democracy. You'll always see signs of activism on their windows, whether they support Berkeley Public School Teachers, or Black Lives Matter.

We love you Homemade. Keep doing what you're doing, and we'll keep eating it up!
